New York State government on the verge of shutting down:

Quote:
As state officials in Albany continue to butt heads over what will and what won't be covered by yet another emergency budget bill, the likelihood of a New York State government shutdown looms large. If an agreement can't be reached by the close of business tomorrow, June 14, the government could conceivably close its doors, which would represent a first in state history.

New York State government on the verge of shutting down

NYS politicians are so stubborn. I haven't watched the news in like 4 months so this was a surprise, I don't know how serious this is but I hope this doesn't delay my chance of getting my permit and what not.

Good. These people are useless. A trained monkey could do a better job than the scum that run the state.

It's been done before in other states. The only ones worried are probably the employees. Most of the rest of us can get by just fine without much gov't.

I fully agree.

I know it's been done in NJ, but all I remember is the casinos in Atlantic City being closed.

Finally, one step closer to bankruptcy! Then we can let a judge decide what stays and what goes. You think people hate Patterson, wait till a judge makes sweeping cuts.

Its like this crap: http://www.whec.com/news/stories/s1604010.shtml?cat=565 (broken link)

These people are saying they would rather take an 18% tax increase than combine Brockport into Sweden. Its because of idiots like this, that everyone suffers, and NOTHING ever gets done.

We all should be worried about this. You can't got to DMV and register a car or get a license while all this is going on. DOT crews will be only used for emergencies-trees down, hazards such as guardrails that have been damaged-emergency road repairs. State Police coverage will be reduced. For over 535,000 who are unemployed, there's no unemployment checks. No NYS disability checks for those eligible either. NYS is in huge trouble. It may pass-but it's only good for a week-then again they'd be this all over again next week. These lawmakers need to get off their rear ends and get a budget done once and for all. In November- they should all be scared they'll be unemployed-I am voting for all new people. No party did their job on this and it's pathetic. NYS is about to go into the tank and it's taking us all with it!

Its like this crap: www.WHEC.com - Brockport residents rally against village dissolution (http://www.whec.com/news/stories/s1604010.shtml?cat=565 - broken link)

How sensationalist. Is NYS being a libertarian that scary to you? Without government involvement in every tiny aspect of our lives, perhaps things will get *better.* Worse for a period of adjustment, of course, but would it be so awful? Government has become a form of babysitter.

1) People will be "forced" to educate (or find a way to have them educated) their children themselves.

2) Bartering will become an accepted practice... anything from cooking>car repairs/maintenance>education>services>childcare>food>tran sportation.

3) People will recognize the need for safety and responsibility in *their own choices.* You'll learn to replace your brake pads and change bald tires yourself, which is no terribly difficult thing to do... because you won't have to get your vehicle inspected.

4) Unreliable garbage pickup will encourage the creation of minimal waste. We will dispose of our waste *ourselves.* As it is, our family of 5 creates very little waste (maybe half of a plastic grocery bag each week)... compost pile, other food waste that deteriorates/is eaten by bugs and wildlife, recycling and piddly amounts of garbage.

5) Taxes that no longer go toward the government can be used to pay for whatever the local people decide. You want to repair a road? Announce a vote, get quotes and have it repaired. Or maybe someone who is already in this line of work can get credit against future fees required for something else... education, garbage company fees, water/sewer...

6) Building codes are for safety. If people would do a little research or hire/barter for a knowledgeable person to watch their work or work being done, they could keep a builder/plumber/electrician/mason in line.

7 and 8) Policing crime and fire protection. As it was done long ago, by volunteers. Give credit to those who volunteer. Those who contribute more pay less. We all need to be protected. Don't think fires would go unattended and women would be raped in the streets... there are bad people who do bad things. And that happens often enough now, WITH our current system.

I think we'd all be better off if we were more aware of other people, our needs vs. wants, knowledgeable on more subjects that most people currently defer to others for pay and more PROUD of our selves, our homes/property, our families and what we're truly capable of doing. I wasn't aware that vehicles would stop running and people would randomly forget how to drive without the DMV. Maybe people would move closer to their jobs, create a new business to fill all of these news needs, carpool and/or walk/bike to work. There would be more gardens and markets for all manner of things.

Life would be simpler... in that we would begin to feel the direct consequences of *our own actions.* Make too much waste? Watch it rot on your own property. Don't change your brake pads or tires? I hope your death isn't too painful. VERY REAL consequences to our own chioces, finally... rather than deferring personal responsibility to the government and then balking when they spank us.

/rant-tangent over.
