Any suggestions? I got pulled over for going 81 in a 65...I am from Baltimore, MD but will be moving to Clinton, NY in the next month. I honestly wasn't trying to speed, was driving my wife's car, and just didn't realize how fast it was going.
The officer also gave me a deposition that (mis-)states the following:
Q: Do you know why I stopped you?
A: Going a little fast. (This, however, was said by me as a question, which he didn't seem to pick up on: "Going a little fast?")
Q: Do you know how fast you were going?
A: No.
I have no experience w/ tickets--I had one in Baltimore many years ago (more than 12) and here they give you the amount of fine/points right on the spot. This one has nothing...suggestions?
Sorry about your speeding ticket, but you were speeding and quite a bit over what the New York State Troopers are willing to overlook. And, your Maryland license plate certainly did not help you.
Having grown up in that part of New York State, and having just relocated to Florida, I'm well aware of Route 81's famous speed trap areas...with the one you got caught in the one longest in existence. Nothing against law enforcement agencies, but the laser speed trap areas don't change much from year to year...those of us who traveled Route 81 frequently knew well where they are all located. And, we know that just slightly above 70mph is relatively safe...anything more than that and you're just begging for a ticket.
The other point that needs to be made...if the traffic is all doing 72mph or so, then that's okay. If the traffic is doing 75 and you fly by at 81mph, you're quite obvious and you're getting a ticket. No doubt about that.
Good luck in your relocation to that part of New York State...it's a beautiful time of year, and a beautiful part of the country. Just watch your speed.
Time to invest in a good radar detector. There are plenty of cops on I-81 and even more on the NYS thruway (I-90). A good radar detector (Escort, Valentine 1 or beltronics IMO) will serve you well. It has served me well in all of those areas where I routinely travel 80+ MPH.
While I have and use a radar detector on superhighways, police use the instant on laser guns nowadays...meaning once they've got you and your radar detector sounds, then it's only telling you ( if you're knowingly speeding) that you are about to get a ticket from the state trooper following you with his lights on!.
Still, best off is to keep your speed down, go with the traffic flow and not stand out from the traffic crowd. Ad, learn where the speed traps are located because they don't move thema around much.

Didn't realize there was that much laser around upstate NY. Mostly what I have seen has been Ka-band radar.
If you can justify $175 - $200 for legal services I can recommend a lawyer in Syracuse who can definitely have that converted to a non-moving violation with no points and no increase in car insurance costs. You'll still end up with some kind of ticket that will costs $75 - $100 plus another $75 or so in NY state surcharges. If you just plead guilty you'll still pay the same ticket and surcharge fees. You can also find out who the assistant DA is for that county, contact them (they'll request a written letter) too explain your circumstances, and if you have a clean driving record otherwise, it can most likely be reduced to 75 in a 65 just by asking. If you want the lawyer referral please PM me. I have a guy who has helped me with this many, many times in this area and he always gets it resolved.
Watch your speed also in northern Broome County, especially south of the Whitney Point exit with a long uphill and downhill in the Town of Barker which has an unusually large Town Court.
hey i got a speeding ticket in upstate NY but i have a FL license, i was going 92 in a 65 zone, so that means 6 points. will the points go on my license since its a FL license?

these days, it all gets transferred around. only a few states don't participate in the national network (FL and NY do I think so they keep in touch with each other).
You'[ll probably get a 1201-a and pay about $100 if it's the same court and judge that I had. I paid $75 and no pionts but I'm sure the cost went up.
