My husband and I are looking to move to Orange County. We have been looking at the new developments, Meadow Winds (built in 2001 or so) located in the Town of Newburgh. Can anybody provide us with any feedback about this area? Has anyone heard anything about the Meadow Winds development? Is it safe? How far is the Town of Newburgh from the Newburgh City (which I hear is pretty unsafe)? Is the Town of Newburgh removed far away enough from the City that crime rates are low? Do I have to worry that the crime and drugs in the City is spilling over to the town?
We will be looking to have children soon and are also worried about school districts, parks, etc.? If we live in the Town of Newburgh, will we have safe areas to take our children?
Thanks for any information you can provide!
Personally I have fond memories of Newburgh and even love it to an extent. At least the water/river front and the friends I made there, though the city really is not very good. The town of Newburgh is nothing spectacular and you shouldn't really have any big issues are troubles as long as you don't dwell with the shady characters. There's better places upstate though.
A rule of thumb when dealing with Newburgh is to stay on the Western side of Route 300. East of 300 lies the city, and west the town. Meadow Winds is west of 300 and removed from the city. It is close to Orange Lake. This is generally a safe area with tons of shopping a minute or two away. The problem is that your kids would eventually enter the Newburgh School District. This school district (especially the middle and high schools) are littered with drugs and gangs. If you wanted to live in a really safe place with great schools, you could go 8 miles further West to Montgomery.
