Also, I'm not sure if you are aware of this; You mentioned you wouldn't want to move to Buffalo, which is where you were born. Interestingly enough, the job market now is actually better than that of Rochester. Kodak is still going through it's transitioning period and that's making Rochester's economy pretty stangnant right now. But the steel mills and manufactoring sector in Buffalo left town so long ago, that the effect has faded and they are actually making some economic progress again. You could also always keep your house in Floirda, and just rent a place in WNY for a few months and see how you like it. If you can't handle the winter, you could move back.

Having been born and raised in Vernon, I am quite familar with Rome. After Griffiss Air Force Base Rome hasn't been the same. Rome tried to rebound with 4 big state prisons opening in the area, all that did was bring big city crime into the area.

Personally I wouldn't move to Rome, but one of the towns surrounding it, Camden, Holland Patent, Vernon are all nice places to live.

The only place to work, unfortunately, these days is for the Indians at the Casino or one of their other enterprises.

Revereware...gone, Rome Cable...gone...Oneida Limited...gone...Griffiss AFB...Gone.

I now live in NC because there is no work left up there.

Smile Moving to Rome

Apt run 350-400 for 1 bdrm houses can be purchased from 30,000 to 300,000 and the 30,000 ones are NOT dumps great value and the banks lend money well you can get a decent 2family for 35-40,000 rent half pay you mortgage. The city is giving grants up to $5000 to start business there is a facde progrma. We moved here 3 years ago from Long Island and love it. There's Theatre, music, casino, food everything within a 15 min drive radius. Our kids were raisd in the city Brooklyn/Long island and they love it here. Ages between 4 and 16. We would not go back to the city for anything.

Come see for yourself, first. City Hall has made a lot of infra-structure improvements it's truly moving on up. Inc. magazine also rated the are in the top 100 small cities to live in see the rome website at www.romenewyork.com

I'm still very undecided. I appreciate each of you posting information. I know its been a long time since I've logged in... that should prove that I'm still very undecided. I guess I'll have to take a visit up there for myself... after the snow melts a little.

I think you should definitely go for a visit first before you haul all your stuff up there so you aren't stuck there if you just hate it, or can't stand the cold weather.

People will probably smile at you a lot when they hear you talk, especially when you say things like, your "fixin" to do something and "ya Know" at the end of your sentences, ... they love it.

It's always a good idea to visit a place first before you move there, so give it a good test drive and see what ya think!

I lived in the Utica/Rome/Mohawk Valley until I was 25. Great growing up there, but once you hit a certain age, you can't wait to leave. It may have its beautiful days in the spring, summer, and fall, but you forget the hellish winters and lack of sun. The job market is horrible. It's really not a great place to live unless you are pulling down a great wage. Even then, there isn't a lot to do. The plus side is the the pace of life. Since moving to the rat race of California, I'd sometimes do anything to be back in the less complex life that Upstate NY brought. You just have to weigh out what you want more. Every place has its good and bad. I don't care where you go. Just some of us have lived in places we know are bad!!
