I heard ROme used to be nice in the 80's and 90's while Griffis Air Force Base was still open. However, with Marcy Prision (name might be wrong) things have gone very wrong.
I grew up in Rome and still live here. We are looking to move to an area outside of Rome, because we are sick of outrageous taxes. We purchased our house for about $70,000 and pay $4000/year in taxes.
There is a serious lack of jobs and Rome doesn't seem to have much going for it. The only thing is you can purchase houses for cheap. The best place to live in my eyes is North Rome.
Apt run 350-400 for 1 bdrm houses can be purchased from 30,000 to 300,000 and the 30,000 ones are NOT dumps great value and the banks lend money well you can get a decent 2family for 35-40,000 rent half pay you mortgage. The city is giving grants up to $5000 to start business there is a facde progrma. We moved here 3 years ago from Long Island and love it. There's Theatre, music, casino, food everything within a 15 min drive radius. Our kids were raisd in the city Brooklyn/Long island and they love it here. Ages between 4 and 16. We would not go back to the city for anything.
Come see for yourself, first. City Hall has made a lot of infra-structure improvements it's truly moving on up. Inc. magazine also rated the are in the top 100 small cities to live in see the rome website at Welcome to the City of Rome, NY - Official City Site
Livinginromeandproud, thank you for the information. We are from Long Island as well and considering the area due to job relocation. Silly question, but if one of us works from home, do you guys have stable high speed internet available? also, how do you find the schools for your children. Thank you, your opinions are greatly appreciated.
On the schools I have no first hand knowledge just guys I work with.
Houses are crazy cheap in Rome so a lot of guys do buy there. If your kids are grown some parts are nice and you can live cheaply. Same applies for pre children or very young children. But the schools are a train wreck. Everyone I know school age children is using private and looking for a place in the burbs.
Rome City Schools are OK(not the greatest, but not the worst based on the numbers), but if they don't do it for you, perhaps adjacent school districts like Sherrill City(aka Vernon-Verona-Sherrill), Oriskany, Westmoreland, Camden and Whitesboro school districts are all solid to very good. Up until a couple of years ago, Rome Catholic was a Pre K-12 school, but I believe it is a Pre K-6 school now, with Utica's Notre Dame Jr/Sr High being the only private 7-12 option.
Roadrunner through Time Warner Cable and maybe Verizon FiOS are options for internet service. Like Sean mentioned, Roadrunner is pretty good.
Rome is a great place to live and work. It's a nice family friendly community with many good recreation places; parks, a nearby ski and tubing area and Delta Lake state park for camping, boating and swimming. Griffiss Business and Technology Park, Griffiss Air Park, Rome Lab and many other places are filled with job opportunities. The entire Mohawk Valley area is poised for major job growth in the nanotechnology, cybersecurity, UAS and aircraft maintenance industries. And the region is rich in historical and cultural activities along with many family-owned ethnic restaurants.
Rome school district is very good and boasts of a relatively new high school building.
