my husband and i are planning on moving out of Scottsdale,AZ soon. He loves nature(hiking fishing etc..), not alot of traffic/people, a small town kind of guy. I want to go back to NYC area because that is where my family lives. We want to compromise to move no more then 3 hours or so of NYC, so he can be away from big city completely, but I can hop in car and see family anytime.
The schools have to be great, and the availability of charter schools would be a big plus, because my child has special needs and public school is too overwhelming to him.
I am a software engineer but would like to go back to grad school for psychology, and lots of universities around would be great. My husband is retiring so a job for him is not important.
I love cafes, night life, culture, and parks and other stuff to do with little kids.
Any suggestions?

Maybe Nyack, New Paltz, Saugerties, Albany, Troy, Schenectady, the Rivertowns in Westchester County(Dobbs Ferry, Ardsley, Hastings-on Hudson, Irvington, etc..), Beacon and maybe even cities/areas like Kingston or Poughkeepsie. All of these places have most, if not all of what you are looking for. If you wanted to go further Upstate, places/areas like Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo and maybe a couple of other cities would work too. Ithaca is another city in Upstate that would work.

Stay South of Albany...you'll be too far from the city otherwise. New Paltz, Beacon, Cold Spring, Garrison, Newburgh, Monroe, Montgomery, (as the previous poster suggested - river side towns in Westchester County - probably a lot of private school options here).

New Paltz 2.0 hours from NYC
Beacon 1.3 hours from NYC
Cold Spring 1.2 hours from NYC
Garrison 1.1 hours from NYC
Newburgh 1.3 hours from NYC
Monroe 1.0 hour from NYC
Montgomery 1.5 hours from NYC

Westchester County less than one hour from NYC

Hastings is a WONDERFUL town. Unfortunately in 2010, they voted in a nightmare of a Mayor named Peter Swiderski. He tried to net & bolt the local deer. He was the first Mayor in the history of New York State to attempt such a thing. He also encourages illegal hunting in the local parks. Until Peter Swiderski is no longer Mayor, Hastings is a terrible place to live. Sorry for the bad news.
