hi
I am looking to rent a cottage or cabin in upstate New York and am confused as
to where to narrow my search.

This would be primarily a summer home and would prefer something near
or on a lake and somewhat close to a town and airport.

My budget is up to 200,000 to purchase and the rental is flexible.

Any advice would be welcome.

How big do you want for 200k? Boating or swimming lake?

The south end of Skaneateles Lake might be doable in your budget, it's very wooded and fjord-like. It's about 20-25 minutes from Cortland or possibly Auburn for re-provisioning and about an hour from either Syracuse or Ithaca airports. If not there try Owasco and Otisco lakes on either side.

Were on Copake Lake and it doesnt get any nicer. Rent a house with a dock and you're good to go. I know exactly where this home is. Golf course behind the house, lake in front and country club within walking distance. A+++ Good Luck!

Ugh just realized all weekends are booked but you can do a M-F. Not the whole summer though I guess. Try vrbo.com though. Its vacation rentals by owner and a lot of friends have had good things to say about it.

Have you narrowed your area down at all? Upstate NY is pretty much the entire state outside of NYC. Finger Lakes? Adirondacks? Southern Tier? Rochester? Buffalo? Albany? Plattsburgh? Hudson?

Square footage? Number of bedrooms and bathrooms? Taxes? What kind of town? City? How large or small? Size of a lot?

$200K would get you into the majority of Upstate near a body of water. Do you prefer to rent or purchase? If you're looking to rent, many places that rent for months or the entire summer are booked very early.
