Hello, my husband and I and our three children are considering moving to the Ithica area (Homer, cortland...) and I am curious about the Teacher's Salaries in comparison to where I am now. I am an 8 yr teacher with a Master Degree and I make $59K. I would like to make very close to this amount in order to make this move worth it. I cannot find any school district salary guides, ANYWHERE for the Ithica area...

I also have a very nice sized Art Supplies budget (I am a high school art teacher.) Are the arts well supported in the Ithica area? I have heard that there is also a huge difference from one district to the next in NYS with regard to how they treat their teachers.

Does anyone have any personal experience that they can share with me and, I really hope, a salary guide to share?

Thanks so much! I would really love to make this work b/c I love the houses that I have been finding in Homer and Cortland!

New York Teacher Salaries 2007-08

It would be tough to find a job in any of the local districts that pay at that level, since for most local districts (Ithaca, Dryden, Groton, Homer) that salary is in the 80-90th percentile range. The average salary for a teacher in the ICSD is about $50,000.

One of the things you have to keep in mind is cost of living. Depending on where you're coming from, you could be getting more (or less) bang for your buck. For example, the average house (3 bed, good shape) in this area goes for about $150-200k, less for a community like Cortland or Homer. The cost of living is around average compared to nationwide figures, and the local salaries tend to be reflect that.

Hope this helps. Sorry that it may not be the news you were looking to hear.

My guess would be that you would make more in NJ than you would in Ithaca. Tompkins County is a bit run down....

What's your cost of living like now, in NJ? Have you looked at the bigger metro area of Syracuse? Why have you chosen Ithaca to start looking, in particular? Will a spouse be working there? Cortland is about the halfway point between Ithaca and Syracuse. Very rural area.

Also - since both SUNY Cortland and Ithaca College do a good bit of teacher training with student teaching in the nearby districts - the relatively few openings that occur probably aren't going to first be offered to a total outsider.

Teachers do not make only $20K/year. I made more than that as a part-time waitress ten years ago.

Stay in school, I-Townz.

It is? Ithaca and Tompkins County has actually gained people steadily. Some communities are "rustic", but I wouldn't necessarily say that it is run down. It is pretty rural outside of Ithaca and the suburbanized parts of Lansing and Cayuga Heights. Most of the rest of the communities are just small villages that are pretty much small town America.

Yeah, that and Ithaca City SD is a good school district, in general.
