My husband and I have 2 year old twins and are looking to move outside of the city. Does anyone know what it's like up in New Windsor? We are hispanic (Cuban) so a diversity-friendly/safe/good schools/nice homes kinda place is what we are hoping to find.

NW is on the south side of the city of newburgh. I'm sure its nice, but it wouldn't move there. I have a house in the town of montgomery. 10 minute drive east on rt 17k. Its in the valley central school district. Very good school district. As for diversity. The majority of Orange County is diversity-friendly. City of Newburgh and Middle-town have a higher concentration of hispanics if that helps. Best of luck.

New Windsor is a tough one. Town isn't bad, has plenty of shops, and the people are friendly - BUT - You are really close to Newburgh and your children will eventually attend Newburgh City Schools. The schools can be dangerous and the city is even more dangerous (actually, the MOST dangerous in the state percentage wise).

I agree with lazyone. Try the Village or Town of Montgomery, Washingtonville, Chester, Goshen, Monroe....

There are parts of New Windsor that aren't in the Newburgh school district, if you're set on New Windsor go for it, just make sure you look into the school lines before making any purchases.

I'd consider most of Orange County diversity and family friendly.

Yeah, get closer to Vails Gate / Salisbury Mills, then you will get into the Washingtonville District - great schools.

School districts vary and your experience will also vary with the personalities and academic performances of your children. Newburgh has as many teachers and programs dedicated to helping your children become college-ready as do some of the other districts. I recommend New Windsor because it is quiet, family-friendly and diverse. If you worry about the Newburgh Enlarged School district, the Cornwall Central School district also services many New Windsor residents.

Stay away from anything that is a city. City of Newburgh, city of middletown , city of port jervis,,,all cesspools with high crime.
