We're getting a babysitter and taking a much needed overnighter next weekend. Problem is, we don't know where. We were hoping to see a concert or something, but there aren't a lot of events going on next weekend. We have visited the Adirondacks enough times to know that this is one of the worst times of year to go, and are rather sick of this rut that we're in where the only places we ever go are the Adirondacks and local casinos.

We want to spend the night somewhere in NYS in a walkable city with a FANTASTIC night life. This is a trip for drinking and fun, not relaxation. A multitude of bars and pubs NEED to be within walking distance of lodging. A gentle excursion for the next day to a nearby historic or natural site would be a definite plus. We are from the outskirts of Syracuse and really want the night to be much more exciting than Saturday in Syracuse. Outside of New York City (taking the nice car for this one, and NOT taking it there!) and Canandaigua/wine country area (already lived in wine country and left for a reason), none of NYS or even closely outside its borders is off limits (needs to be less that 5hrs one way drive time).

Anything that has to do with haunted/spooky stuff or fishing would be a plus as well. Haunted bed and breakfast, great fishing spots, etc. we enjoy those things.

Where should we go?

How about New Paltz, NY in Ulster County?

A college town with lots of bars and places to eat...certainly fits the bill for FANTASTIC nightlife. Guarantee you would NOT be disappointed.

Nestled just to the East of the Catskills, you could easily manage a quick excursion up to the Mohonk Mountain House. Amazing elevation with views (at the top of the main path) of up to five states on a clear day.

A quick ride from the Hudson River too, lots to explore along this historic waterway.

What about Oneonta and then a trip to Cooperstown? Plattsburgh might work too.

What about Ithaca, Corning or Saratoga Springs?

I'll second Saratoga as a solid option. Look into New Paltz though. Think it perfectly matches your description.

Thank you for your help everybody! I've always wanted to see the museum of glass at Corning, but I don't think there's much going on after the sun goes down there? I'm not a huge fan of Ithaca, it is an hour from my home, travel there for business sometimes and it's just a tad bit too liberal for me. I think New Paltz does sound good. We were planning on going somewhere a little more urban, but it is much easier to be able to get around in a little village, plus we really do like hiking and mountain climbing, we just get bored at night in the Adirondacks when it's too early to camp. Being rather conservative and casual post-grads, do you think we're too old for this trip, though?

Not at all. You'll see your share of [somewhat] older individuals. Plus school will be out by then so the normal college crowd won't be around. If you were thinking urban, you could take a short ride across the Hudson to Poughkeepsie, NY; or better yet, a short ride North, West of Hudson, to Kingston, NY.

If you decide to go to Corning one day, check out the Gaffer District: www.gafferdistrict.com

Oneonta is known for it's bar scene as well. It's in the foothills of the Catskills. www.sweethomeoneonta.com

Another small community to consider for a day trip could be Sackets Harbor: www.sacketsharborny.com

Same for Alexandria Bay and nearby Clayton: www.visitalexbay.org

Hey Christine. How about Ra cha cha. Stay at the Inn on Broadway. You can walk to live theatre, sports, resturants and there are several enertainment districts (bars) downtown. You can walk to them all. Park Ave, Monroe or the South Wedge are all walkable. For the next day you could travel to Niagara Falls, or the Letchworth gourge.

How could I forget Buffalo's Elmwood Village or North Buffalo(Hertel Ave.) areas. Albany's Lark Street might work too. Downtown Troy or Union Street in Schenectady could work.
