I'm just curious, is it really as bad as people say? I can count on one hand the number of positive reviews I've heard about the post and area in general. Not exactly the most popular Army post out there, with possibly only Fort Polk beating it in the "assignments to be avoided at all costs" list. I have a few buddies of mind who were stationed there and to a man they prefer not to go back...ever. Common complaints include the harsh winters, the remoteness of the location, and the area's supposed lack of entertainment for singles. I ask this because I'm looking for possible PCS locations.

It is pretty remote in terms of the immediate area, but many people go to Canada or Syracuse as far as going out. Winters can be tough if you're not used to such weather. Sometimes you get women that go to Fort Drum to go to the club.

CKH hit it on the head. You will have to travel a bit if you want to "go out." Also worth mentioning...Casinos in Massena and Verona (near Rome)!

If they are younger, some hit college towns like Oswego, Potsdam and Canton. I know in my old unit, a lot of guys would go to Ottawa, Kingston or even Montreal. Sometimes you would see Canadian girls come down too.

The winter is going to be cold & snowy .... I see you're currently in Co Springs/Ft Carson so I'm guessing the snow isn't going to be a big deal but Watertown gets significantly more than the Springs & its much colder. I use to live in the Springs so I know that while it does get cold it also warms frequently during the winter, thats not going to happen very often Watertown. For the most part it gets cold & stays cold.

Its really gonna be what you make of it. 2 hours to Ottawa (which is an amazing city) or 1.5 hours to Syracuse (which has a great nightlife scene for a smaller city, a minor league baseball & hockey team as well as NCAA Division I sports at SU). Personally I always found Co Springs to be a very boring town, not enough nightlife for a city its size & Ottawa easily outclasses it in that regard ( I personally think Syracuse does as well but that's debatable depending on what you are looking for I suppose). If you venture out to Ottawa & Syracuse I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. The area right around Ft Drum doesn't offer much in the way of entertainment/nightlife but it more than makes up for it in outdoor adventures. Lake Ontario, St Lawrence Seaway, Thousand Islands, multiple lakes/rivers & easy access to the northern edge of the Adirondacks all offer great opportunities for anyone who likes the outdoors.

Great points and if you like small quaint towns with nice Main Streets, you might like Sackets Harbor or Alexandria Bay. Both are really good places to go during the summer and have quite a bit to do.

It is located right on the edge on one of the largest wilderness parks in the lower 48. Pretty amazing location if you ask me. But yeah, you have to like winter. There is a reason the military put its bases in such places.

I believe it is fine. Fort Drum, as it is now, is only 24 years old. I know some people stayed in apartments in Evans Mills or in Watertown. You might even have soldiers that live in the Northern suburbs of Syracuse, as there was or is a shuttle from the Air National Guard Base there. Single Soldier Housing (Barracks)
