My fiance and I currently live in the shore area of NJ, and are looking to relocate to a more quiet setting (preferably with lower property taxes! ) Due to travel requirements for his job, we would like to be somewhere within an hour of a major airport (flexible on this).
Does anyone have any suggestions? Most of NY state looks gorgeous and I'm not even sure where to begin looking. A small town setting is fine (although decent internet access will be a requirement as when he's not traveling he will be working from home). If possible, we would like a small amount of land for hobby/self sustenance farming purposes (a few to 10 acres would suffice).
My apologies for the lack of details. I am not overly familiar with what airports are available in NY state outside of the NYC area. My fiance will have to fly to Boston and Minneapolis for work on a regular basis. So I suppose my definition of a major airport would simply be one he could get a flight to those areas from (without taking some sort of charter flight from a small airport).

If I read the posts right, I'd say that any of the bigger Upstate airports may work. I think Plattsburgh's airpirt has direct flights to Boston.
With those travel requirements, northeastern CT would be a great fit. Lower taxes, quick commute to Boston, and direct flights between Bradley and MSP, 3x/day.
One hour drive to BNIA can put you in a 50 mile circle around the airport -- and leave time left over. We rarely have backups on flights. Delta is nonstop to Minneapolis; Jet Blue to Boston.
You can find anything from new condos on Lake Erie to lofts to historic homes in the city; and every outlying town has something different. Personally, I do not think you will find Erie County expensive.
BTW, Amtrak goes from Buffalo to both cities as well, if he likes relaxing travel.
There are lots of towns in Ontario County that I think fit your criteria perfectly. 35 minutes to an hour from the Rochester International airport which has daily flights to Boston. You'll be in the Finger Lakes with many areas that are really affordable. And it's beautiful and you'll be able to find your property with no issues. Towns like Gorham, South Bristol, Naples, Farmington..etc come to mind.
OP, you really have pretty much anywhere in Upstate NY to consider and it may be a matter of finding a small town and property that you like.
