I'm planning a trip to NY soon and will be going to NYC for a week, but I also want to check out upper NY area too. Anyone know what some of the bigger cities up north are? I want somewhere were it's safe and they have a good night life and is happening. Let me know! Thanks =)

upstate new york has many charms, but a booming night life isn't among them. if you want to leave the city i'd suggest you try the adirondacks for the scenery (lake placid or lake george 4 or 5 hours drive north) or maybe long island for the beaches (the hamptons 2 hrs away by train) and a fair amount of evening activity. but as far as nightlife goes, NYC puts everything else to shame.

Try Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany and even smaller cities like Troy, Saratoga Springs, Utica, Ithaca and Binghamton. It depends on what you want and Buffalo and Albany spots are open until 4 am.

Can't forget Watertown(a lot of military cats), Schenectady, Geneva, Elmira and even the Hudson Valley cities. Nyack is a nice little community with good nightlife just north of NYC.

What kind of spots are you looking for?

State-specific topics should be posted in that room, not general U.S. Moving to the correct room.

How far from NYC are you willing to venture? Keep these distances in mind: NYC to Albany (150 miles), NYC to Syracuse (250 miles), NYC to Buffalo (400 miles). Some options in the outermost reaches of the NYC Metro Area in the Hudson Valley include the waterfront in Newburgh NY (60 miles from NYC), spots in Poughkeepsie NY (70 miles from NYC), spots in Cold Spring NY (50 miles from NYC), and, as CKH mentioned, Nyack does offer several club spots (20 miles from NYC). Hoboken NJ also has some good spots, but this is right on NYC's doorstep (a minute across the river). Don't rule out some good old Jersey Shore!
