I have a car (a Saturn L-series wagon) where the front license plate holder is "riveted in". Someone hit my car in a way where this holder fell out. I was not a witness to the accident where I could report it, but they were nice enough to leave my plate and holder on my front windshield.
This happened to me once before and it was a pain in the butt (and somewhat expensive because it had to involve a dealer) repair. I am very between jobs right now and need to limit expenses as much as I can.
My question is, can I indefinitely have the front plate on the bottom of my windshield (I took it out of the plate holder so I could wedge it in the center easily)? Or is what will happen is one day I'll get pulled over and have 48 hours to fix it to avoid the ticket.
Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated, thanks!

If your car is registered in NY State, you definitely risk getting a ticket as the plate definitely needs to be secured in the front of the car. (I know for a fact people in the NYC area getting tickets for not having the plate secured that way after having an accident that damaged the front of the car and they couldn't secure the plate properly to the front without having it fixed).
