Hey everyone. I have a job offer in Harris, NY making $75K annually. I would be the only income until my spouse can find something. For the money, can me and my family (5 of us) have a good quality of life? I am nervous about rental prices and heating costs (I live in South Carolina.) Any help would be appreciated.

Also where to live within a reasonable driving distance to the hospital with good schools and safe area for my kids would be appreciated! Thanks.

This could you decide where to live: https://www.nystart.gov/publicweb/County.do?year=2010&county=Sullivan (broken link)

New York schools - NY elementary, middle and high school information

Perhaps parts of Sullivan County in the Pine Bush SD would work too.

Different people define good quality of life differently. Perhaps some additional detail on what you are looking for would help others on the forum provide info. For example, is walkability important, access to parks, being in town vs country, or vice versa, cultural events, etc.

Sullivan County is quite rural aside from Monticello and perhaps Liberty. Looking in to Orange County is probably a good idea if you want to be close to shopping, good schools, and other amenities. The drive from northern Orange County (such as Montgomery or Pine Bush) would be 30-40 minutes. Someone who was in a similar situation made a thread just like this one and it should be of great assistance to you: Working in Sullivan County, where to live?

I am meaning with $75K can I afford to pay my rent, afford gas/oil and still be able to have my daughters in dance, my son in Karate, go grab a bite to eat when I want. We don't expect to live high on the hog but we don't want to be scraping the bottom of the barrel, you know. It is a considerable pay raise and on Cost of Living calculator and it is about 14% higher col there in NY than here in SC.

You shouldn't have a problem in Orange or Sullivan County with that salary. Once your spouse gets a job it will be icing on the cake. You will have more options for dance and karate, for instance, if you choose Orange over Sullivan.

I agree, in Orange or Sullivan counties you will be fine on that salary. We lived in Monticello when our son was small (I would never recommend Monticello to anyone, sorry if I offend anyone with that!). There were very few organized activities for him. We ended up going to Orange county for shopping and most activities. Sullivan County is beautiful, there just isn't much there, aside from outdoor activities.

I take it you are an RN and will be working in CRMC in Harris. Do you have a guranteed contract or sign on bonus that would keep you employed? There has been a big cut in medicaid reimbursements to hospitals in NY. Due to the poverty in CRMG's geographical area, it will be negatively affected by this. Try to make sure your job is relatively secure before moving up.
