Hello, I am a 34 year old single guy who would like to make the jump from Long Island to the Hudson Valley. I am thinking that I would like to be within commuting distance of Woodstock. I am going to be just renting for now. I do not have a job prospect up there which makes me very nervous but I want to move for a lifestyle change and a chance to buy property eventually. I know this is very vague but does anyone have any thoughts?
Not to be too discouraging, but if you don't have job prospects, how will you be supporting yourself? In this economy it may not be wise to just show up without a means of income. Hopefully you have skills/training that are in demand in that area, or at least of the nature that you can take pretty much anywhere, such as healthcare?

Actually I have thought about going to nursing school for a long time just so I could live in a rural place and still carve out a living.
By commuting distance, I assume you mean by car since there's no equivalent to the LIRR or express buses there.
Try New Paltz. Lot's of aspiring artists and professionals live there. More likely for ex-LI transplants to find like-minded people.
I am aware that I have to drive, just as I have to right now. There really is no reliable public transportation on the south fork of Long Island. Besides how am I going to plow the long driveway onto my ten acres I plan to have if I don't drive a big truck? lol
From your original description, I'd say don't go too rural. To be within commuting distance to Woodstock your relocation search will include both the Middle and Upper Hudson Valley. Some locations that may appeal to you, from South to North: Poughkeepsie, New Paltz, Tilson, Rosendale Kingston, and Hudson.
