I want to move to a quiet town and a friend of mine told me that Staten Island was mostly Suburbs and pretty quiet. But, I still want that sort of urban feel so he told me about Clifton and St George. He told me Clifton would be more affordable though. What is this area like? What is the history?
I live in Staten Island (though on the West Shore), but I know a decent amount about Clifton.
I don't think Clifton is the greatest area. It borders some pretty rough areas (the Park Hill apartments to the west and Stapleton to the north). It isn't terrible by itself, but the only really good part is south of Vanderbilt Avenue and east of Tompkins Avenue (west of Tompkins Avenue, you have a lot of single-family homes, but they border the Park Hill apartments, so I'd question the safety of the area. You might be safe on your own block, but if you're walking to the bus stop or running to the corner store, it's something to consider)
I'd recommend going a bit further south to Rosebank. The only real disadvantage is that the SIR is further away, but there's still buses that take you to the ferry.
St. George has some good pockets, but again the same situation applies (though the terrain is more hilly, so if you find a safe place on a hill, you're more isolated from the problems in the other sections of St. George)
So if you're looking for an area that's quiet but still somewhat urban, I'd look in a different area. You can try along Forest Avenue in Westerleigh and West Brighton (though the general rule of thumb is to stay south of Forest Avenue. When you go east of say, Bement Avenue, you can go further north). You can also try along Victory Blvd in Castleton Corners.
Checkmate champ has it right on the money. There are some nice, affordable apartments in St. George close to the ferry. That's where I would suggest you look if you want to be within walking distance of the ferry. If you want to be a short bus ride away, I'd recommend Silver Lake area, Randall Manor, or Snug Harbor area.
