I am looking to relocate to the Hudson Valley area of New York in a couple years and want to start finding out anything and everything. I would love to be in a small charming town but with easy access to the city. My husband and I both love the outdoors as well as the nightlife. I am a new Realtor and would love to be in a prime area for Real Estate as well, or at least within driving distance. ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

I'm partial to Dutchess County since I grew up there. Close to NYC, great little Villages (Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Millbrook, Wappingers Falls to name a few). Nice blend of NYC and New England Attitude and style. Politics lean slightly liberal.

Good Schools in Hyde PArk, Fishkill, TOWN of Poughkeepsie, Wappingers

Close to the Catskills and Taconics for Skiing and Hiking. The Culinary Institute provides the area with some of the best restaurants and chefs in the entire country. Even small mom and pop diners allow culinary students to develop their chops.

Hudson River is a great recreational resource for Sailing, Boating, Rowing, Kayaking. Wappingers Creek is good for Fishing, Canoeing/Kayaking.

IBM used to be the regions cash cow, most of my friends that still live there self employed or running their own businesses.

Gets cold and Grey between later December- Early March. Summers are generally mild.

Best bets for you are Orange, Ulster, Dutchess and Putnam Counties, but it depends on your price range. Catskills and outdoor activities in your backyard and NYC down the road or by rail. There is always something to do and see here - Waterfront Newburgh, something at West Point, endless shopping, Hudson River nearby, nice river-towns in Putnam and Westchester, and one of the greatest cities in the world a short ride away.

Prime real estate opportunities in all counties surrounding NYC, especially in Westchester and Putnam.

Summers are HOT, 30-50 inches of snow/winter depending on where you are in the valley.

Great! Thanks for all that info...I do plan on visiting first too, but hearing straight from people that have lived there is sometimes more helpful than that!
