Hi, I know your original post was from December but perhaps you are still looking? You may like Clifton SPrings / Canandaigua area. Canandaigua is about 20 minutes from clifton springs and has a VA hospital. Plus many many retail opportunities and is on Canandaigua Lake. Clifton springs has a quaint village of churches, inns, B & B's a small grocery store but not a walmart, Mc Donalds, busy retail area. Good diners nearby. a mom and pop kind of place. The village is small but there are quite a few houses available here now, Some in the village, and some in the country. It's very pretty here. We get snow, but we don't get pounded. It's 35 minutes to the next major city ( Rochester). The school is ok Not terrible not fantastic but that is probably in the eye of the beholder and what you have to compare to. There is a pretty active homeschool contingent here with an active activity/social group and the school is used to dealing with HS'ers. Clifton Springs has a good small hospital as well. If you wanto to learn more you can email me. Or you can check out the town and listings by typing Clifton Springs NY 14432. It is a village in the towns of both Manchester and Phelps. Or you may like Penn Yan which has a VA hospital and is even more rural yet with a large memonaite and amish sector.
These also is a VA hospital in Dutchess County (Castle Point) and it is right on the Hudson River. Catskills are an hour west. Hospital is near Town of Beacon and Town of Fishkill.
