I am considering building a new home. I am not sure where to start. Can anyone refer me to a builder/architect?
Has anyone here built their own home? If so can you outline the process?

Your quite general about what you are trying to do. Do you own land? If yes what town is it in? Is it rural or a suburban location? If you don't own land are you looking for a community? what town?

You see my point? All of the above will determine what you can build and how. Any good architect should be able to draw you a custom plan if thats what you want. Obviously the local ones should be able to recommend a general contractor.

no I dont own land. We would like to find property in New City, Congers, valley Cottage(clarkstown school districts). I understand I can look for a teardown but I am not sure what resources to use to find one.

Even a tear down will cost a significant amount of money in those towns. Perhaps working with a realtor (no I am not one) that can find you a home along the style you prefer then work with an architect to make it exactly what you would like.

I think finding an undeveloped lot/location may be a challenge and the lands remaining are in my impression less than desirable.

Are you currently living in the area or out of state?

Probally not, if your heart is set on CLarkstown (New City, Congers) then start house hunting in your price range. There is a good probability that whatever you find will be older and may need cosmetic updating figure that in and don't spend to the max limit so you'll have the money you need to update kitchens/bath etc.
