Here's "the plan." I hope people can offer advice.

I would like to relocate in the next year or two to the catskill region. I would like to live as close as possible to Mt. Tremper, maybe Woodstock. For work, I am willing to commute perhaps to Kingston or even albany if possible. (I don't mind about an hour commute). Currently I pay about $800 a month for rent where I am and am hoping to pay the same or less. (I am paring down my stuff so I can fit into a smaller space).

I currently have helpdesk/network admin experience - about 7 years - and would be looking for a job in that field.

Yes, I know the area is "boring" and there "aren't a lot of other young people there."

Thanks,

-DaveK

Sound like a good plan! We did the move almost 2 years ago, farther west in Delaware Cty. and depending on what you enjoy doing, there is a lot going on in the area! Not the bright-light, disco dancing, bar-hopping things, but there is always something happening in all seasons.

We love it up here, space, wildlife, good folks, slower-pace, stopping to chat, holding doors open, watching the deer, hearing the coyotes, etc!! Sunsets are to die for, and the sky at night is better than any plantetarium you have ever visited. X-mas tree lightings in town, a blanket of snow to warm you, a roaring fire to read by.......

But, Woodstock is quite a suburban/hip hot spot, and is a lot busier and built than the surrouding areas, so my description will be a tad off!

Today, the new resort in Highmount at Bellayre was announced as approved, so a nice chunk of opportunity is moving in, and in your field you may wish to keep a close eye on that one-you may find a nice job there!

Good luck, visit many times before you pick an ares-each town is unique and has its own way. Rt. 28 is a great main route to connect all of us, so an hour commute gives you a good range.

The leaves are just starting to change, so come on up for a visit and look around!

Thanks for your encouragement. The biggest issue of course is whether I can make it financially speaking. It's just one income (me) and two cats to feed. I had been convinced that it was the kind of area that only retired people with lots of money lived, but my recent information seems to counteract that.

I also play guitar (classical and jazz) so I think I might find stuff to do in that area. I teach on the classical side of that too so I'm hoping I can find some students.

I do get up into the area about once a year (for zen retreats). The plan is for two years - and most of that will be saving money, so that I can live for 4 or 5 months without working to give me time to look for a job.
