Anyone with info on Oneida and the surrounding area? We are relocating there in Spring. We have 2 children ages 8 and 14. We're used to low property taxes($2,200 for 1400 sqft home on .25 acres) and great schools. Not worried about the snow. Wisconsin gets it too. How's the area for shopping? What are the costs for auto ins and utilities.

You'll love the area. Its very scenic and peaceful. I've been living in Madison county for little over a year now and can't complain. A quick 20 or 30 minute drive for any major shopping in Syracuse or New Hartford.

Oneida itself has some small shopping centers that include Wal-Mart, Lowes and a Price Chopper for groceries.

Message me if need help finding a Realtor or a Home Inspector

Smile Oneida

Oneida is a great place to raise kids. You will like it here, it is a safe and friendly community. Also, it is a very scenic area to be in.

As far as taxes- I have a 2,700 sq ft home on 4 acres and my taxes this year were:

School-$1,992 & County/Town $1,297

This winter to heat my home I paid around $1000 a month for fuel oil. My car insurance w/ collision is $900 a yr.

Hope this info gives you an idea of the costs in CNY.

$1000 A MONTH FOR FUEL OIL!!!! 2700 sq. ft. is a big house though. That's still a lot for heat expense. Now I understand why you are FL bound. Don't they have gas heat?

Default Heating Expense

Unfortunately, the road I live on natural gas stops 1/2 mile down the road. I live in the city limits, but it is to expensive to have the power company extend the line to my home. So we have to use fuel oil. I also have used a pellet stove which turned out to be a bust. Only heated one room up. So I got rid of it. This winter I had a propane fireplace installed and that actually worked better then the pellet stove. My husband has been thinking about an outdoor woodburner, but the initial expense is costly. I have come up with a better solution go south.

Flordia bound? When you add up the real estate taxes, the cost to air condition your house 24/7 from May to September, and the skyrocketing cost of homeowner's insurance (my aunt pays $1,100 to insure the INTERIOR of her small 2-bedroom condo) you may not be any better off. Give me a better reason to move out of beautiful Oneida to brutally hot and overcroweded Florida.

Default Reasons

Oneida is a nice place to raise a family. My child is grown and is headed off to college in Florida. Through the Florida Prepaid College Program, he is attending a 4 yr. University for $10k. That is impossible here in NY for that cost. I am an alumnus of SUNYIT and it is over $18,000 for 4 yrs and leaves a lot to be desired.

In addition I dislike the cold weather and really dislike being couped up inside for months at a time.

Oneida is a nice small city, but seriously what do you get for your money here? Why do you think there are vacant business fronts, run down buildings, and shoddy properties in Oneida. It sure isn't because the economy is prospering in Oneida.

In addition, most people have gotten out of here a long time ago. If it wasn't for the Casino no one would be here. They are the only viable employer in the area and everyone hates them. Go figure, I own 3 homes in the City of Oneida and 1 business and I like the nation. Imagine that!

I guess it is a good thing that not everyone thinks the same way. If everyone did it sure would be a dull world and everyone would live in Oneida, NY.

Hi FlaBoundGal,
I see that you own 3 homes in Oneida. Do you happen to have any of them available for rent?
