My partner & I are wanting out of FL & looking at NY & VT. We have family & friends in both states. We have a 11 yr old who will be starting middle school, so we are not only wanting a gay family friendly area but also ones with good schools (the schools here in FL are horrible). We know COL is way higher than FL but that is fine.
Any suggestions? We would want somewhere close to shopping & transportation & also close to areas that have parks or something that is fun for us to do as a family.

Ithaca or surrounding area. COL in Upstate NY overall is actually on par with Southern states in most cases, if not lower. If you go with a place outside of Ithaca and its schools, I'd look into Lansing or Trumansburg. Perhaps Newfield too.
A sleeper may be Plattsburgh, which had an openly gay mayor in recent years. It is across Lake Champlain from Burlington VT and an hour or so away from Montreal. Plattsburgh City, Peru, Beekmantown and Saranac Central are districts you may want to look into. I'd say that Plattsburgh City SD would be the top choice though.

You could look into New Paltz, cute, very liberal and open area fun town (it's a College town) SUNY new Paltz in the area. Never heard anything bad about the district
Best of luck

Western New York is a pretty good LBGT-friendly area. We have the largest core of LBGT community between Toronto and NYC.
You have to "pick and choose" the areas inside of WNY, but by and large, it's great here. Mark Grisanti is one of our NYS senators, and he was a deciding vote for marriage equality.

I'd also say that certain suburban areas in the bigger and mid major metros in Upstate NY may work too. Here's a list of rankings for Upstate school districts: 2011 Upstate school district rankings - Buffalo - Business First
Many on the first 2 or 3 pages could work.

The suburbs of Burlington, such as Jericho seem like a good fit. Good schools, lots of skiing, boating, hiking, parks and outdoor activities, near an OK airport, probably has some jobs, and is going to be just about as gay friendly as it gets in the US (see this post from this thread).

Just saw this. My partner and I and our 2 kids (ages 12 and 9) live in the Rochester area. It is very LGBT friendly and lots of good schools in the suburbs.
Good Luck!

While the cost of living is higher, you do get what you pay for. Education in general is better in NY. Massachusetts is #1 and has many VERY gay friendly areas so there's another state to look in if you can't find what you are looking for in NY. The Northeast is beautiful! And very few places will be anti-gay. Most people just don't care that you're gay, straight, or whatever. It's not an issue. They'll be much more interested in Florida and telling you that so and so in their family moved there years ago for retirement. LOL
