My family is torn about where we want to live. I see a lot of useful information here so I'm hoping to collect some advice. I work in Times Square and would be okay with a commute up to an hour (a little more if I really like the area). My wife is originally from the country so a small town would be a nice change from Brooklyn. We also lack but would like to be part of a nice community. Food and health are important to us so we like to shop at farmer's markets. We also intend to home school our 4 year old daughter. Ideally we would do this with other families who live near by.
We've thought about Norwalk CT because of family connections but as a town I don't think it will meet our needs. We also can't buy anything so we are looking to spend around 1600 in rent.
I'd love to hear about what's out there and then start visiting places.

Look into Woodstock or kinston. Proberbly more then an hr though less then 2. Woodstock is a very cute "hippie", organic little town. And of course upstate is just beautiful.
