I'm thinking about moving out of New York City, but I don't know anything about nearby cities. Basically, I'm entering my 30s and I feel like moving to a slightly quieter spot where I can have my own place without roommates and perhaps start to relax and enjoy life a bit more. I'm a web developer and work from home, so the actual physical location is unimportant as I don't have to commute anywhere.
If I were to think of my dream place to live, it would be somewhere that I could get a one bedroom apartment for a reasonable price (sub $1000 per month), be within roughly an hour's train ride from New York City for holidays and long weekends and such, and, very importantly, be somewhere that I don't need to have a car (I hate driving, and what I love about New York City the most is the convenience, so it would be nice if I could find a place urban enough that I could still just walk to the grocery store and whatever). Also, nice coffee shops and diners and parks would be icing on the cake.
I'm not a big partier and don't go to clubs or anything, so I'm not looking for spectacular nightlife, but I'm also not looking for a place filled with minivans and soccer moms.
Anyway, again, I don't know anything about the surrounding area really and Googling around using Craigslist and Urbanedge has been quite daunting, ha ha, so I'd be very grateful for any good recommendations that you guys might have. Thanks!
I live in Astoria, Queens right now. I like it just fine :-) but I can't really afford my own (nice) place without roommates. So I'm thinking that there must be someplace relatively nearby, outside the city, where you can get *most* of the benefits of living in a city, not all of course but most, at a cheaper price and fewer of the downsides of living in the city like the crazy bustle and crazy prices.
The places that CKH mentioned aren't really feasible without a car in my opinion. The Hudson Valley is a difficult place to live if you don't have a vehicle. I can really only think of one place that where having a car wouldn't be a huge issue and your needs are met (aside from the sub $1000 rent), and that is White Plains.
Well Astoria is a more prominent area of Queens so I would think that you're paying a bit more for rent than you would if you lived in a different area of Queens, correct? For your requirements, I don't think you should leave the city. Unless you wanted to check out places over in NJ, but I'm not a huge fan of that state/area lol.

But I can't shake the feeling that there must be a smaller city/town somewhere nearby where I can just plop myself down in the center of town (so I don't need a car) and live at a slightly slower pace. See, I only go into Manhattan once or twice a month, so I feel like I don't "need" the entire New York City experience. And I thought I could maybe save some money by moving slightly farther away. But maybe not?

You will save money only in the fringes of the NYC Metro. You won't save in Westchester, Rockland, or Putnam Counties in New York. You will save in Orange and Dutchess, but again, it is difficult to live in these counties without a car. Perhaps the Village of Fishkill is an option as shopping is within walking distance...
You might also want to look into the Village of New Paltz...could be a really nice match for you...college town with everything you need within walking distance...
