So we put in an offer about 10 days ago for a short sale property in Montgomery town. We had no sense of urgency in moving so we were willing to wait. Unfortunately we were just told that my husband's transfer to orange county would have a better probability of happening soon (rather than in a year) if we are in the process of moving or have already moved. If he isn't close... commute will be around 2 hours each way if we are still down here in NYC. He needs to drive his car around for work, there's no working around that.

We would like to at least be on contact by years end or possibly moving or already moved. If we wait say 6 weeks for an answer to our offer from the bank and then it gets turned down then we have to start all over and our "backups" probably will be long sold....

Does anyone have any recent experience in how are short sales working lately? Is the process to canceling an offer pretty easy?

This ball was just dropped on us tonight. We were willing to wait 2 months for an answer but now no longer have the luxury. In the end he might not get transferred until march but if we are in the area he will be first pick even if he had to drive back into the city for a couple of months .

Tomorrow we speak with our agent. But i would like to know if this is possible to do....in our offer papers there is no offer expiration time. We would love this house but are willing to move into others that might have less square footage. It's amazing that at our price point (not much) homes can vary so much and the smaller the square fottage the bigger the kitchens it seems.....which is good for me not for my husband wanting that master bath. =)

Oh and the reason they'd prefer if we were located before or shortly after the transfer is that they pay for travel timeto get to each work site. He can do more work by traveling 30 minutes each way, instead of 2 hrs. Because if he's 2 he's away and the sites contact is up in an hour he won't be arrive in time. His productivity will go down and then there will be no reason to keep him in that territory when he can do better in NYC where he's closer.

He requested the transfer when the opportunity presented itself which is the main reason why we are moving.

Best advice I have is to speak to a real estate attorney. Realtors aren't lawyers and may not have the correct info.
