I get e-mails and phone calls from head hunters in Rochester, periodically.

That area is dead, period. Companies don't offer relocation, they offer sub-par wages, etc. Benefits are mediocre.

All this yammering about "STEM jobs" is a joke, this country already has somewhere in the range of 2M+ people whom are qualified for such jobs, but either can't find decent jobs in those fields, or went off and did something else. The Onion had a great parody of this situation the other day, seems like every other state are chasing "high-tech jobs". One region people avoid like the plague, already, is Upstate, NY, and judging by the moving company stats nobody is moving to NY for these supposedly high-fallutin' STEM jobs NYS government keeps crowing about.

Ironically, the average annual income/pay in the Rochester area is higher than many growing areas, including Greenville: Here are the highest-paying markets for employees in all jobs - The Business Journals

So, it may depend on the type of work you are looking for.
