Hi. I currently live on Long Island, in Seaford. If I had a great income IT could be the best place to raise a family. They community, schools are awesome and also close to the beaches, parks and railroad.

Unfortunately, the costs of living here is way too high. I have a very low income and we need to relocate because it is impossible to keep up with the rent, bills.

I am looking for: safety, good schools, low rent/real estate prices( compared to Long Island).

Any suggestions/input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Where do you work? You will need to factor in the commute time and ease. How many kids and do you require extended services like late pickup? Are you looking to rent an appartment or a house?

Hi. I do home daycare until I can find a better opportunity out of my home. I wouldn't need childcare unless I do find a job out of my house. Thanks. Amy

How much is your monthly budget for rent and school? Looks like you might be getting a good deal at Seaford with 5 kids. Hard to think of a less expensive place. Maybe you can rent a 3-BR apartment in Queens within SD-26 which is one of the better districts in NYC.

If you would consider WNY you would probably find it much cheaper. We are paying a higher rent (1500 for a sfh on 1.6 acres overlooking a creek and trees and nothing else, large home with many amenities in a great school district) but most of my friends here seem to be paying 750ish for attached homes. We moved from SoCal and besides the gas prices (which are only barely cheaper) the cost of living here is much lower.

Rent here is out of control- 2575 a month plus utilities. It is insane. Even for an apartment it is not under 2000. Totally not affordable. Great place to live but not worth the struggle.

You might be able to find a 3BR apartment within SD-26 (Bayside, Fresh Meadows, Douglaston, Glen Oaks, Oakland Gardens, etc.) for $2,000. Just make sure it's zoned for SD-26 before you sign the lease. Call the school/district to run the address.

House/townhouse is very unlikely.

Hi, I'm a mom of 2 kids (ages 9 and 12) also looking to move back to NJ or NY. I would love to know if you mom's did end up moving to NY state and if so, what did you think of the place you ended up. We're moving up from Houston, TX and I want to make sure we live in a place where the kids can have friends, social life, good schools, etc. Any input would be greatly appreciated!
