Agreed. Especially if you can afford them.
But then there is the husband employment. NYC is not rich in opportunities for electrical engineers. As a matter of fact, industry (in general) and NY are not the best match.
Really? I live in a little backwater in the Southern Tier, and there are numerous engineering positions available. I'm sure there are many more opportunities in the bigger cities in Upstate.

Hello again,
We have been tirelessly researching our upcoming relocation for quite some time now, and the input we have received was very helpful. We are visiting the Syracuse area trying to get a feel for the neighborhoods and overall way of life. So far on our visit we liked the Fayettville/Manlius area as well as Dewitt seems interesting. As I previously mentioned I am interested first and foremost in a safe family friendly area with a very suburban feel with also being close to bigger city amenities. We plan on visiting the northern suburbs tomorrow and we do not want to miss places that we really need to see that give us a good idea of how we could fit in. It can be challenging and sometimes frightful to drive around an area you have never been in and we want to avoid the sketchier areas. What is the "bad" side of Syracuse? Also, what suburbs are farthest from this side and what are your suggestions for suburbs to look at while here? Since we have a large family, we need a 4-5 bedroom home 2500 sq ft plus in the 350-500,000 range. We would like to be close to good schools, shopping, and recreation. This forum is always very helpful so once again all input is appreciated. Also, suggestions for fun things to do with the kids while we are here? Thanks

Syracuse is a matter of generally rougher inner neighborhoods, to varying sizes and degrees and solid to nice outer neighborhoods. With this said, the South Side is the most notorious, but improves the further out you go. Nedrow and Onondaga Hill(somewhat) are close to nicer neighborhoods on that side of town, but Nedrow is more working to straight middle class and Onondaga Hill is fine and cover a wide area/school districts(all solid to best in Upstate NY).

The Eastern suburbs, which you've already been to(DeWitt and the Fayetteville-Manlius area) are the most affluent. Onondaga Hill, Skaneateles and parts of the Baldwinsville area, among some others, are up there as well. Your budget will allow you to live anywhere you want to though.

Given the basic things you are looking for, in my opinion, I would look in DeWitt and specifically off of East Genesee Street across from that huge Wegmans, the DeWittshire/Orvilton area(if you like some walkability and an old money look), Bradford Heights or near Tecumseh Elementary/east of Drumlins Golf Course(Jamesville zip code). I say this due to being a good school district with ethnic/racial/religious diversity that is in close proximity to colleges/universities, hospitals, live theater, sporting events, shopping, parks and festivals. From these areas, you can do these things within in a short drive and without taking a highway, most times, if at all.

If you have anymore questions, just ask.

One last thing, don't forget about the Western suburbs. A suburb like Westvale may be a nice location in order to get to shopping, hospitals, colleges/universities, etc and it is in a very good SD(mainly Westhill, but small portions are in the West Genesee SD).

Thank you for the information. We are not ruling out any suburbs to look at because we are just looking for the best fit. What are some northern suburbs that would be worth looking at? We will look at those areas today. Also, where are some parks and recreation areas (ice skating, etc) in relation to those suburbs mentioned?

Many of the electrical engineering positions available are for EEs with "experience," say 5 years or more in a specialized sub-category of EE like integrated circuits. What your hubby needs is an "entry level" EE position. It is very important to get that first job right. IMHO, localities are of secondary importance. Get the position first.

There are ice rinks in Cicero and the Radisson community in the Baldwinsville area. There are county parks in Onondaga Lake Park/Long Branch Park in the Liverpool area, Oneida Shores Park in Brewerton and Beaver Lake Nature Center in the Baldwinsville area. There are also town parks in the towns of Clay, Cicero and Salina. Salina has public swimming pools at some parks and William Beach/Park is a town park in Cicero on Oneida Lake. There is a Family YMCA in Clay on Wetzel Road and I believe that there is a small Y near the ice rink in Radisson/Baldwinsville area. Schools will have playgrounds as well. Radisson is a planned community with a rare HOA, but has plenty of green space, trails, basketball courts, etc. Village Green and Timber Banks, both planned communities also in the Baldwinsville area have golf courses.

Also, some neighborhoods in the town of Clay have green space/parks with playgrounds and basketball courts within the neighborhoods.
