Can someone explain the Schenectady thing? Since 1998 I've lived in the Adirondacks, the Utica area, and now Rochester and I had no idea I was supposed to hate Schenectady.

It's a Capital Region thing. As CKH said, the list is sort of skewed towards Albany and this is one of the things.
That was really funny. Yes, I'm guilty of being from Suffolk out on LI, but I agree 100% that it gets tiring when people think NY = NYC. It is so myopic. Too many great places within NYS to list which are overshadowed by a congested mass of concrete and humanity.
