Binghamton: $109,300

Buffalo-Niagara Falls: $132,000

Elmira: $124,900

I think the Albany metro is the deal of the century for people who love to visit NYC and Boston, but can't afford to live in either, being each under 150 miles away. And Montreal is only a bit further. While its not possible to commute there, it would probably be similar time-wise to driving to the Hamptons on a long weekend, but without the traffic.

Binghamton, while not my favorite city by any stretch, is also a bargain. Its only 3 hours to NYC and Philadelphia but 1/4 of the average NYC home price (and I would argue less because nothing under 20 miles from NYC is under $500k that's decent).

Think about that- even if a job pays 50% less than what it would pay in NYC, you're still ahead of the game in many Upstate cities. Something to consider...
