It's only relatively recently that Wegmans got full of themselves and located in what they perceived to be high rent but mostly unwalkable suburbs. Which is a bit of a shame compared to their walkable but still parkable locations in Auburn, Corning, Williamsport. Ithaca is an interesting case for them in that the strip location happened to be across the street from a low income neighborhood

Very true and they were in Syracuse's North Side at 1st North and Pond, which has always been a more working class neighborhood. I think that they closed some locations within similar city of Rochester locations too.
Are you saying the WHOLE upstate area is not so great?? We are deciding between the Finger lLakes region, Niagara County, NY, Adirondack region of NY, and coastal CT right now.

Take things with a grain of salt. I think you would be fine in any of the areas of Upstate NY that you are interested in.

There are a lot of nice areas in there. The people on this thread were complaining about low income areas full of people on welfare, but you have bad areas in ANY town and in ANY state.
Unfortunately, I just researched a little more and found out the NY has really high tax rates. I think a bit too high for us, which is really unfortunate, because I've put a ton of time into researching the area and doing job searches...

Tax rates are higher, because the home prices are below the national average. So, you can make out paying less or on par with many Southern areas for housing. It depends on where you are going and what you are looking for, as I've seen some possibilities in other areas up here. It all depends on criteria too.
I think they may be talking about NYs crippling income tax rates.
Perhaps, but pay is higher than most too. I get it if that is the case, but over cost of living I would think would/should be considered.
