Cortland allows you to possibly work in Syracuse or maybe even Binghamton, while also going into Ithaca. It is about 20 minutes or so from Ithaca and about 30-35 from Syracuse. Binghamton is about 35-40 minutes away from there.

Agree 100%. It's close to Ithaca by way of a 2-lane state road, and an easy direct interstate commute to Syracuse or Binghamton. There has to be job for CPA in this area!
And look what you can get for under $200,000! (Moderator - I am not a realtor, I found this on Realtor.com; honestly).
Cortland does not have Ithaca's LGBT community. Its much more conservative than Ithaca, and there's very little social overflow between the two. It is near the interstate.
There are advantages of asking locals for questions about an area. The disadvantage is they project their own prejudices.
Cortland is definitely cheaper to live in, which is good if you're working class. But as I said, its a lot less progressive than Ithaca. A lot of people from Cortland drive to Ithaca to work. You'd stand a better chance of finding work as a CPA in Ithaca than Cortland.
Granted, your boyfriend might not find work as a CPA in the finger lakes at all. The only way for your to know for sure if just for him to apply.
And if you know you want to live in a LGBT friendly area, STICK to YOUR GUNS on that issue. I'd honestly stay working class Cortland is fairly redneck. If you like that culture, it's a great place for you. If not its going to suck.
Put it like this. When I went out in straight bars, in Cortland, several times I had drunken straight guys threaten me because I'm gay. Now I'm a 6'3" bearded guy, so I accepted their challenge to a fist fight. They backed down.
If the op and his boyfriend are not aggressive types, they will have trouble in Cortland. Be prepared to fist fight.
^This is why I asked if they wanted a small town/city, as Cortland, while being in a good location, may not have the vibe they want. Other Upstate NY small towns/cities like Binghamton or perhaps Plattsburgh could work, if Ithaca doesn't in terms of a job. For instance, Binghamton has the nice West Side area south of Main Street and nearby Vestal has a good sized Asian population due to Binghamton University, but has quite a few year long Asian residents. Plattsburgh had an openly gay mayor and is close enough to Burlington VT and Montreal. A place like Clinton outside of Utica and home to Hamilton College could probably work. There are others that may work too.
This isn't a knock on Cortland and it may work, but it does have a different feel.
Also, the more I research, the more that Binghamton may be a good fit socially/culturally and even on the job front. It is a metro of about 240,000 and it is one of the safest metros in the country. Here's some information on the West Side neighborhood: West Side Neighborhood Association [WSNA]

I'm thinking Ithaca, if we choose that area-to start. After a year or two, we want a place further out with some land for food growing and some animals. I'd prefer not to have visible neighbors eventually, but it would be nice to have a larger town/city with conveniences such as variety of food, cultural events and places to meet people, etc.

The other benefit from this is that after a year or two in the area you'd be more familiar with the finger lakes and would more easily be able to pick communities based from your actual experience in the area. Good luck on the job search.

In that case, when that time comes, Cortland County would be a good match due to the location and rural character of most of the county. Just my suggestion, but around Homer to the Onondaga/Cortland county is probably where I'd look there.

Outside of Ithaca, Tompkins County is rural too. But the OP can look into all that after his boyfriend finds work in Ithaca, and after they move.
When I lived in Cortland, despite the occasional meathead, I overall liked it. Just wanted to say it definitely has a different feel from Ithaca.
NyWriterdude, interesting perspective! I've never encountered anything like that anywhere I've ever been, including many places in the south and midwest. For people to behave like that, the area must be pretty rough?
