my family and I are looking to move to either Rockland or Orange county. Ive done my research on rockland and love it but i know need some help on learning about orange. We are all used to the subarb life and im wondering if orange county is very rural? if so, what parts are more of the subarb feel? by subarb I mean, nearby shops/supermarket, close neighboring houses, sidewalks to walk around. I work in NJ so i would prefer the towns that are closer to NJ. Thank you

Hmmm....based on your post, may i suggest to you Warwick, NY. A quaint little town/village in Orange County. It is about 15-20 minutes from the nearest major highway (Route 17/Future Interstate 86) and has a nice quaint feel. The town of Warwick has purchased a lot of land in the town over the last few years to prevent sprawl and overdevelopment. And based on your statement that you want to be close to NJ, you can even take Route 94 straight into NJ.

I live in Chester and I can get from my house to Dorney Park in Allentown, PA ( Via I-87 to NJ I-287 to I-78 ) in about 90 minutes. I can enter NJ at the state line in about 30 minutes (I-287).

Warwick I would say is semi-rural, there are farms, and there is a central village with a hospital, but no major box stores. Only corporate stores are a CVS, Burger King, and a Dunking Donuts. A little bit outside the village on the way to NJ off Route 94 is a Shop Rite & a Price Chopper.

In the event you want the big box stores, you can probably get to Garden State Plaza in about an hour.

Orange is substantially more rural than Rockland, which has a distinct suburban sprawl feel. You can get a sense of this in Orange -- particularly around Middletown and Newburgh -- but many of the surrounding communities are quieter and feature open spaces/land, but also have a little downtown area.

Look into Warwick, Chester, Goshen, Washingtonville, Cornwall to start. These towns have their own supermarkets/gas stations/convenience stores/etc. and are close to the big box stores of Middletown and Newburgh.

Look into Suffern area. Just if you have kids make sure wherever you live is Ramapo Central and not Ramapo East Schools. Thats the best bet for you IMO, also nanuet has a small "downtown" but has tons of box stores and is right on a train station like Suffern is, Pearl River as well you could check out as well as Nyack. Everything in Orange other than Monroe/Woodbury area is really far from any non rural area in Jersey. Orange County other than the big "area's" Monroe/Woodbury, Middletown/Wallkill, Newburgh" is rural. Newburgh area and Middletown area are both far from any non rural place in NJ, It would help if you stated what area you work in and the commute time you prefer.
