We are considering it as part time residents being reverse snow birds.

Jobs are hard to find in the Adirondaks, and I think housing costs, especially if you're looking to buy outside of the towns, are probably higher than wage levels would lead you to expect because of the limits on development. Winters can get very cold, frequently with temps down to the -20s. May and June are "black fly" season. Facilities and services that you might take for granted elsewhere in NYS aren't as easy to access in the North Country, from doctors and hospitals to shopping.

That said, if you like living in a more remote area with great scenery and with wilderness practically outside your door, then the Adirondaks might be a good place to live. That the Adirondaks are within the NYS Forest Preserve means that it's unlikely that if you buy an isolated place away from town that somebody will come along in a few years and turn the property across the road into luxury high-rise condos. OTOH, you are probably going to have buy a large acreage (I think that the minimum lot size in much of the Adirondaks outside the towns is 40 acres) with little possibility of subdivision (let's say, dividing up a 100 acre property among your 3 children). Within the towns, there may be zoning restrictions to help maintain the village's "atmosphere". NYS DEC may also have restrictions/regs to maintain water and air quality. Keeping the Adirondaks wild really means restricting what people do with their property so that the area doesn't become the Poconos or Berkshires.

My favorite Adirondak town is Saranac Lake. It's just quaint and pretty with an historic district, a touristy town without the tackiness of Lake George but not as pricey as Lake Placid which isn't far away. If money were no object, I would definitely have a summer camp/cottage there. It is the home of North Country Community College, which is the only public college within the Adirondak Park and which gives the village a little different vibe than many other Adirondak towns. Saranac Lake

You might like Tupper Lake area or Saranac Lake, kinda depends what your reasons are for relocating to upstate NY..
Plattsburg is out of the mountain region and is basically a shopping center fo the Montreal crowd.

We like the Queensbury/Glens Falls area ourselves, it's up in the mountains and has big box amenities that we are used to.

I go to saranac lake area every year for a week. It is great but to live there it would depend on what you do for work.
