I'm considering renting an apartment in downtown Nyack. Can anyone let me know what the parking situation is like? I've gathered online that parking is scarce & getting more expensive in the downtown (Broadway & Main) area. Are there residential parking permits available through the town? If a downtown apartment doesn't have parking, are there monthly lots nearby? Are meters free after a certain time of day? Is there any free parking for residents downtown?
I heard on the news this morning that Nyack wanted to raise parking rates from .25 cents to $1.00 an hour! It looks like they are backing off this proposal, however it looks like it will still go up to .50 cents per hour.
There are no monthly lots, however parking is free after 6pm and on Sundays.
You really only need to be concerned with parking if you are living on Broadway or Main Street and in the "downtown" area which is essential 2 blocks up and down Broadway and 2 blocks up and down Main Street, give or take a block. That is where the metered parking is primarily and even then, the side streets are often free. I've been going to Nyack for years and always find a spot to park, even if I have to pay every now and then and that is rare anyway.
One thing you should look out for, however, is that you may get ticketed even if you are parked legally. I got a ticket for an expired inspection sticker once, heh. So, the meter maids will check out your car even if it's parked legally!
I say: Go for the apartment in downtown Nyack! I have always wanted to live there and love the area. Don't let minor squabbling over parking issues by the town's officials deter you from living in this little wonderful corner of Rockland County.
There are monthly spaces available in two municipal lots in Nyack. They can be procured at city hall (9 N. Broadway). Additionally, many residents park on the side streets where alternate-side parking is available for free.
