How about a split like the first map, but where Putnam, Orange and Dutchess countirles are also in the downstate half? Those counites have had a lot of NYC and Westchester commuters move there
Movements like this will only grow across the nation as urban centers strengthen their political control over the rural areas of the state. California, Maryland, Colorado, and New York each have vocal, though powerless, "split-cession" movements at this time. California is actually involved in more than one idea: "Cascadia" and a movement to break California into SIX separate states!
I'd prefer to see more local control transfered to the various regions with less centralized power at the state level. Remain one state, but allow upstate regions to make their own decisions without being drowned out by the sheer volume of representatives the city sends to Albany. How that would look I can't imagine, but with time we could work out a system.
The big issue is Gerrymandering. California already abolished political gerrymandering. Maryland is one of the most Gerrymandered states (along with Michigan, North Carolina, Illinois, and a few others). Gerrymandering disenfranches the people living there.
"Split-cession" will never happen anywhere, because it requires a constitutional Amendment. Can Congress agree on 3/4 vote to ratify? LOLOLOL
@Opin.,,, I think that the secession movements are from conservatives who see their tax dollars going in the toilet for entitlements....
As well as to corporations that end up moving out of the country eventually or don't create the jobs they say they will, even after getting tax breaks or money to stay/relocate.
All of these idiotic Republican rednecks who think they are better off without "the big city liberals" in their state need to put a sock in it. Go ahead and secede...then watch as your roads, infrastructure, and services that you say you don't need but rely on anyways start to crumble because you no longer have the money for the upkeep. Cities *subsidize* you people, but you're too ignorant to realize it.
It's the same reason why the south doesn't become a third world country...the northern states subsidize them.

I think you should toss out those antiquated notions...
