Hello everyone .

I've lurked on City-Data for years and this is my first post. I'm a 40ish born and raised New York City resident who is starting over due to divorce, and would love to purchase a home, but find myself priced out of NYC due to the skyrocketing housing values here.

My family needs a lot of space and I am in love with the grand older homes available in the Historic Districts of Poughkeepsie (Garfield, Academy, Dwight, and Church in particular). They're beautiful, provide the space I need and are for the most part within my budget. We won't need to use the schools.

From what I've read on CD, the more troubled areas of POK are north of Main Street. I've driven around the south on a few different occasions but haven't seen enough activity to give me any real insight into the QOL.

Could anyone really familiar with the area provide any insight in the safety and general QOL of the Historic District?

Thanks for taking the time to help!

H.Posh

I've driven through the area several times, all morning hours, and did not see anything to be concerned about. Does anyone know about the QOL issues?

I haven't lived in the area in a long time but I read the Poughkeepsie Journal online. Those streets you mention have beautiful, huge old homes but from what I've read about crime in the city of Po'k, I'd have concerns about moving into that section. Go up there, stay at a B&B in that area, talk to people who live there, subscribe online to the Journal.

That part of Pok is tricky, as the neighborhood conditions swing from good to bad and back pretty rapidly. Of the streets you listed, Dwight is the most favorable from a location perspective. I would avoid Academy and generally stay as far to the east as possible.

I've been there once and I almost lost. If only for a good local's help, I might not got home.

25 years ago, Academy was the prime street for prostitutes and drug dealers. I can remember buying 3 joints for $10 on Academy back in 87-88 for $10. The worst part was two were all rolling paper, the 3rd had a tiny pinch of weed in it. So it isn't even a good place to score.

Thank you! It's hard being priced out of the area you've lived in for a lifetime. The crime seems equivalent with NYC, but if it's really concentrated, that could be problematic. An overnight stay might be in order.

Dwight also has the benefit of less expensive homes.
