We're going to Ithaca in the next week and would like to have a lunch out with the family. We would like something a little more interesting than a typical chain, but we need someplace that will work for our kids (7, 6, toddler). They're well behaved in restaurants but we don't want the side eye from other patrons simply for showing up! It doesn't even have to be a sit-down place as long as there's good food, and something more than just sandwiches, since several of us can't eat bread.
We like all sorts of food, except seafood and strictly-vegetarian. There was one that seemed interesting, I forget the name but it's dubbed the Maine-Kentucky themed BBQ and seafood place, but I'm wondering if it has a strong smell of fish, because we couldn't really tolerate that. BBQ is awesome, though.

I would recommend the Ithaca Ale House for their burgers. I have seen kids there. Where ever you go you have to stop off for ice cream at Purity though.

Or the Cornell Dairy Store on campus. Both ice cream shops are very good.
When I'm up in Ithaca and need a quick bite, I stop at Manos Diner. It's not the best diner that I've eaten at, but it's OK and they have a kids menu. When I'm downtown near the commons, I like the "Mate Factor" cafe. It's a project of a strange cult, but the food is varied and good. Finally, though you say that you don't like vegetarian, you ought to try the Moosewood. It's one of the top vegetarian restaurants in the USA and they do serve fish.
I just went to the Ithaca Ale House for the first time this week and it's a treasure for the kids if the weather is nice. The 3 3-year olds in our party ran around the huge yard and had a grand time.
People bring their kids to Agava but I find it a step too fancy to bring my preschooler to.
Our regular family favorites are Saigon Kitchen and Viva Taqueria. I'm sure that there are gluten-free options at both, and my particular kid loves the food at both. Both have carry out options, and a picnic at Stewart Park near the playground would be lovely. The Ithaca Bakery/Collegetown Bagels in town also have gluten-free choices, in spite of the name.
And Purity for ice cream is also a must.
