My wife and family (3 small kids) are looking at houses in southern Rockland County and we're trying to get some info on the Pearl River, South Orangetown and Nanuet school districts. (We've heard that Clarkstown is the best in the county, but have ruled that out).
Can anybody provide any insight as to how these districts, particularly the high schools, compare in academics, special programs (i.e. sports, music/art, after-school, etc.)
Pearl River is a phenomenal school district (I know, I went there 10 years ago). Pearl River was an "Excelsior" district for academics not too long ago and their afterschool programs are great (I did both sports and theater). Almost every teacher I ever had there wanted to be involved to help you excel in whatever you chose to do...
Actually I agree about Pearl River, all three of my children have graduated from there and went on to very good colleges. Also South Orangetown and Nanuet are also very good schoold districts as well. The public school system in Rockland as a whole are very good. They offer so much academics, sports, arts/music. All the best to you. Moderator cut: realtor soliciting

Pearl River does not have full day kind and no pre K. South Orangetown I believe does.
Here are the websites to visit to check them out:South Orangetown Central School District, New York (http://www.schoolmatters.com/schools.aspx/q/page=dp/did=12827 - broken link)
It's a good school, but imo if you live in Pearl River you're better off just sending your kids to public school because there are more opportunities (extra curriculars, class choices in the upper grades) and the school district is great. The school has seen a drop in size in the past few years because parents are pulling their kids out and putting them in the public school.
