I was terminated. I had accumulated 20 sick days. Our contract says: "...ten years of full-time continuous or 12,000 hours of continous service shall be paid an allowance of $30/day for each unused sick day at retirement." What is meant by "full-time continuous..."? Does it mean if you are terminated, you cant get paid for sick days? Does NYS have laws about this?

if youre not an at will employee and you have an employment contract things might work differently in some cases or they may still default to the way at will employee matters are handled

last year on 7/1/14 my company switched over to a ESTA system where we now get 37.5 hours per year of sick time. any sick accumulated prior to 7/1/14 can still be taken up to the year 2020 but i don't think we can liquidate it upon separation

i don't know what is meant by "continuous" or "retirement" in your case

continuous might mean you have a permanent schedule unlike maybe a private contractor who may put in 40 hours per week but not on a weekly basis

Sick days aren't like vacation days which are a vested benefit which can be cashed out if you get canned. It sounds like you need to have worked at least 10 years with the company and retire from that company to get paid for those sick days. It is an incentive for you not to use them. Looks like you are out of luck.
