Cincinnatus is relatively self contained for being a hamlet. You can get groceries (of the processed food sort, better to grow your own), auto parts, hardware, go to school, funeral home, bank, pizza, library, and bar right there.

Greenwood Lake is small. No clothing stores or supermarkets, but you can find that in nearby towns. There's bars, restaurants, marinas, hiking, town events.

In terms of a less isolated place, this village also comes to mind: Village Of Fayetteville - Home Page

It doesn't hurt that this is on the edge of/just within the village: Towne Center at Fayetteville | COR Development Company, LLC

Agree with Norwich.

I'd like to add Saranac Lake, Schroon Lake and Woodstock.

How about Ellenville and Watkins Glen? Too big?
