What are some of the smallest self contained municipalities in the state in terms of not really needing to leave that community for most or all things(shopping, entertainment of some sort, etc)?

I kind of like Old Forge in terms of your criteria.
Also, Malone, but that might be too large a town to fit into your definition of small.
Reason being both are pretty isolated unto themselves IMO.

These are what I had in mind, but it could also be a community that is near a bigger town/city as well.

Hamilton and Norwich come to mind.

Penn Yan perhaps. I think of my 3 entries as pretty self sufficient because you'd have to make a concerted effort to get out of town to go anywhere. Not all that familiar with your 2 entries to offer any comment.
I'm discounting commuting for work.

Also depends a bit on your definition of shopping, entertainment, etc..... I know lots of little villages that have a convenience store or 2 and a Dollar General, and "entertainment" consists of drinking with your buddies at the local gravel pits.....

In terms of shopping, I'm thinking of clothing, groceries, etc. Perhaps a shop or more.

I guess in terms of entertainment, I thought about a movie theater and/or something arts based, sporting events, festivals, maybe a little bit of "nightlife", etc. A place doesn't necessarily have to have all of these things either.

I mean... I'd assume Sherrill only because of its size status, but I've never really spent much time there at all.

Maybe Middleburgh, too? But all of the places that are coming to mind for the criteria are isolated spots in the middle of nowhere.

Brockport is a community that isn't isolated, but seems to fit the criteria.

Maybe some place like Mt. Morris too. A town with its own distinct character and downtown. The center of a large agricultural region but still very small as a town.
