Hey all! I currently live in a small town (Sidney, NY) and we're looking to live closer to my father in law. We found a place near N Hamilton Street and 9G (so sorta close to Marist). I've heard some bad things about this area, though--should I be worried? It didn't seem to be too "hood" when I came to visit.
Parts of it are bad, and parts are very nice. You need to look around before you buy. The section by Marist is busy, but nicer. Sadly, due to the lack of employment nearby, its not a great place anymore. Lots of unemployment and empty shops.
Location: Westchester County, NY -> Pinellas County, FL -> Dutchess County, NY -> Denver?

Can anyone comment on property taxes? It seems like taxes jumped up by over $1000 last year when I checked on Zillow. I assume it's a mistake.
Town of Poughkeepsie is very nice and suburban with higher taxes and decent schools. City of Poughkeepsie - Main St. and adjacent hood areas are ****. The area below Hooker Ave/Vassar College is nice, livable and relatively safe.
There were 5 shootings in Poughkeepise in the last few days.
Alistair:
Have you considered LaGrange or Hopewell Junction, maybe Hyde Park? I took tractor trailer lessons in that area and drove all throughout Poughkeepsie, it really isn't that nice, same for Beacon and Newburgh.
I agree with what I see here. The suburbs of Poughkeepsie, including Town of Poughkeepsie are nice, the city is not too good. But be prepared for a higher cost of living than Sidney. You will be only 75 miles from NYC and that drives real estate up.
Lagrange , lagrangeville , hopewell junction , pleasantvalley are all nice towns as well as town of Poughkeepsie ( different that city of Poughkeepsie) . All these towns are considered subarbs of the city of Poughkeepsie .
