We love visiting this town and are curious to hear what it is currently like to live there? What are the pros and cons? Crime? Schools? I have seen mixed reviews on here, but the posts are a few years old.
I think Beacon is wonderful in many ways, even though the schools are not at the top, and crime still occurs. If I were to move back to NY, I'd probably move to Beacon.
Pros: Within the beautiful Hudson Valley region, plenty to do if you are the outdoorsy type, close to NYC for either commuting or entertainment purposes, good shopping options in the area, close to major interstates, more progressive mindset keeps city moving forward unlike sister-city Newburgh
Cons: Area becoming more congested (Dutchess Co. one of faster growing in state), still some instances of crime (not as bad as it used to be), schools fair (though Fishkill, Wappingers known to be a bit better), can be pricey, aside from train service, public transportation is spotty at best
Does anyone here have recent first hand experience with the Beacon schools? Some of our children have special needs. Would we be better off focusing on Arlington school district? We love the progressive, artsy vibe in Beacon but schools ARE important.
Did you ever find out about the schools in Beacon, diydesign? We are looking at Beacon, along with several other spots, and also have children with special needs.
No, RootedRambler, we have not heard anything about Beacon Special Ed. :-( But Arlington School District (Covers Lagrangeville, Poughquag/ Beekman, part of the Town of Poughkeepsie, part of East Fishkill and Pleasant Valley) is supposed to be good.
Thanks for your response, diydesign. Good luck with your decision/move!
