Thanks for the information!

Cortland bus stops at 6:00 PM. Oh, my... They're thinking just about commuters, I guess. (Most jobs I have held, I *worked* until 6 or later... never mind a wish to do anything else in the evening! LOL)

I also don't want to sidetrack this to my personal needs - the discussion of neighborhoods in general is interesting.

As another commented, check out Binghamton. It's got some issues now but some really nice neighborhoods, good transit (bus), hospitals and Binghamton University. Just my two cents.

True and specifically the West Side(south of Main) and the western half of the South Side(essentially the areas sandwiching the Susquehanna River) comes to mind in this regard. You also have the zoo and Recreation Park within those areas. You are also close to big box shopping on Vestal Parkway in Vestal or the area around Harry L. Drive in Johnson City to the west and Downtown Binghamton to the east.

Here are some bus schedules: BC Transit Routes and Schedules | broomecountyny

While it isn't perfect, this may help give an idea of areas to look into, for those interested: https://www.walkscore.com/

Theoretically you could live in a few neighborhoods in Hudson but the public transit infrastructure stinks - the major benefit is access to the train and I am racking my brain to think of where you could live and have both that and access to food shopping.

Midtown Kingston could tick the boxes if you were OK with bus transit to NY. There is semi regular bus transit aroud Ulster County. Kingston is an incredibly affordable place to live still although gentrification is underway in quite a few neighborhoods.

New Paltz could possibly work but you'd run into a similar situation as in Ithaca with rent prices.

Are there areas of Poughkeepsie, Middletown or even Newburgh that could still work?

Newburgh and Middletown are both really hard without a car IMO.

Poughkeepsie could possibly work (not sure about walkability to conveniences) but the colleges there drive rents up too
