Good morning!

My husband has been offered, by his employer, to relocate our family from KCMO to the eastern side of Orange County in February. We're even willing to reside across the Hudson in Beacon or Peekskill considering their proximity to bridge crossings. This could be a great opportunity for our family! Having never been to the northeast, my husband and I could use any advice you have to offer! We are a family of four plus a dog and cat. Our kids are 11 and 6. My husband and I both work (I am a professional drafter.) I am willing to let go of my current position to move and see what our new area has to offer. My husband's new salary will support us in the meantime.

This, obviously, may be the biggest decision we make as a family. And our decision greatly considers the well being of our children. We'd like to accept the offer and really make it a worthwhile move for our kids. We'd love a neighborhood with plenty of children for them to make new friends. We assume this neighborhood will come with many amenities for families, both indoor and out. We like to garden, compost, support local farmers, restaurants and other businesses. One thing we do know is that New York (and surrounding states) will provide us with scenic mini road trips/adventures that that we currently enjoy taking in Missouri!

I really appreciate your feedback!

Will your husband's company engage a relocation specialist firm to help with the move? If they do, don't let them push you into buying a house too soon. Resolve to rent for a year or so. Having both a dog and cat will complicate things a bit, but it's important to get a feel of the various towns and villages before commiting to buy a house. You just can't do this on one or two inspection trips.

Most of the places in Orange and Dutchess Counties have a City-Data information page that may help you. See link.

The complications of renting with pets did cross my mind. We've always rented and have had luck with our pets and landlords although I can't say we'll receive the same luck when we try to find a place there. We are considering purchasing but, like you said, don't want to rush things. Thanks for the help!

Do you know where in eastern Orange County your spouse will be working? I only aske because there may be communities in SE Ulster County, specifically New Paltz, that would fit what you are looking for in a community.

Warwick (in Orange County) or Fishkill (Dutchess County) could be good options for you. Sorry, I don't have any links to provide.

At first I was going to suggest the Town of Newburgh, and then saw you had kids.
Nope, forget that idea.
The town is just fine, I lived there for many years and loved much about it, but that enlarged school district is not fine at all. Actually, it's a nightmare.

I believe that Goshen, Highland Falls and Cornwall may be options as well.
