Hi guys,

I currently live in Brooklyn and work in Manhattan. I don't drive and would love to live in a walkable town with up to 2-3 hours commute to Manhattan using public transportation. I don't mind long commute times, as I would spend the time reading on the train. Do you guys think this is possible?

I'm looking for a more quiet, nice area with good climate, lakes, opportunities to do outdoorsy things like hiking and going on long walks. I would like to have a nice downtown or Main Street area for shopping/entertainment. I don't like going to bars or clubs and more to myself, though not antisocial. It will be great if I can be involved in a community, do some volunteering, things like that..

I will be renting with a budget of up to 2000k/month.

Is what I'm looking for possible?

Thanks! I thought CT is generally not a good option for those without a car? Is Fairfield different?

Perhaps Goshen or Beacon?

There's a main street, cheap rentals, good town, beaches, train is downtown

I guess I'll need to check it out for myself, thanks beerisgood02!

I have also read a lot of good things about Beacon and plan to visit there also.

Just looking for best options for me I realize that no car limits me greatly but I'm hoping that willing to commute for longer may provide me with few more options.

Beacon or Peekskill. Both have really decent downtowns and Metro North.

You cannot get better hiking than the Hudson Highlands (east of the Hudson), and Bear Mountain/Harriman State Park (west of the Hudson).

Forget about Fairfield. It's just another typical suburban bedroom community. And forget about hiking. I'm guessing that is not what a single person moving from Brooklyn wants.

Thanks! Is Peekskill considered safe? I read that there are a lot of undesirable neighborhoods there.

There is one bad area, but I wouldn't worry about it unless you are trying to buy drugs.

The downtown, once a complete dump, has been completely revitalized. Lots of cool restaurants, and a large theater attracts well-known bands. There are also lots of artist lots. I'm sure you would not be the only Brooklyn refugee there.

It is closer to the city, so it is more expensive than Beacon. But it's very cheap compared to Brooklyn.

And again, forget Fairfield, a suburban town with ZERO diversity. In fact, forget the entire state of Connecticut that is commutable to NYC. Doesn't sound as if it is for you.

Thanks a lot! I was just reading what other posters on this forum say about Peekskill and there were some rather not too happy about it. I will definitely try to visit though and see it for myself! Ok, so Peekskill and Beacon it is
