Is there anything appealing about Cortland?
LOL, nope.

Unless you really, really, really like the country/desolate/isolated living feel. Very generic stores along that main drag there near the college but that's about it.

I guess MAYBE its only redeeming quality is its proximity to Ithaca. But even that's a stretch as Ithaca is like 40 mins away.

You are referring to the Route 281 area of the city, but it does have a nice Downtown area. Depending on location to and from, Ithaca is about a half hour away down Route 13 and some that work at Cornell or in Ithaca commute from there. Cortland Transit’s Route 6 goes to TC3 and Dryden, while its Route 7 is a Cornell Commuter Route. Home

Syracuse is only about a half hour away and Binghamton is about 40 minutes away. So, it is in between some bigger cities that aren’t too far away. More information: https://www.elocallink.tv/m/v/player...ort18_wel_iwd#

I guess that's not bad for people who don't mind driving. I just remember driving out there during winter when it was snowing. It was scary lol.

Yes, it is quite hilly, but the city sets in a valley that is quite scenic.

I see ckthankgod has done a few restarts on this thread. While I am south of Cortland a good 45 minutes, I have been in that area many times. Got to know the area very well when I finished up the last 5yrs or so of my Army time as a part-timer with A Nat Guard unit (now gone) in Cortland. Like much of upstate NY, it has seen it's manufacturing base slip away over the years..Brockway Trucks, Smith Corona typewriters, etc..No getting around that was not helpful to that area as a whole. With that said...maybe..what's a plus about Cortland is its location..the same fact in a negative way, used by other former posters on this site to disparage the area. Cortland, Broome, Chenango, Tioga, Chemung, and Steuben Counties..all of which I am very familiar with..have taken on a new attractiveness...since our health disaster 18 months ago. Just talk to realtors about the interest from people from downstate. The move to remote work..these upstate areas...inc Cortland..have become a new alternative to life (expensive) in the NYC /LI area, metro NJ, and Philly. Cortland's eating/shopping choices have grown since this thread was first started. And, as with these other Counties I have mentioned, there is a plus that many overlook..the transition/travel time/distance from a semi-rural/rural home to medical care, shopping, etc...is very reasonable compared to larger urban areas. Btw... for those unfamiliar by my mixed use of "Cortland"...both the city and the county it is in share the same name.

Great points...I believe the manufacturing base in the city/area is now anchored by Pall trinity Micro, Marietta Hospitality, Pyrotek, Byrne Hollow and a handful of other companies in the city and other parts of the county. Some of these companies have current job openings as well.
