Looking for opinions on downtown Middletown, NY please!
My husband is stating a relatively low paying internship in Middletown. It'll only be for a year, but we'll need to rent a 2 bdrm as cheap as possible. (under $1200/mo) However, so far I'm seeing most of the more affordable places in the downtown area. Is living downtown safe enough for a family?
We have two kids (10 and 7), but school district doesn't matter because we'll be homeschooling for the year. We also don't mind "city life", traffic and noise isn't a big deal to us, and the idea of walking outside our home to shops would be fun. However, I only think that's a plus if I'd feel safe doing so with my kids. Is downtown OK, or should I look more towards Goshen? Any other areas that might fit our needs?
If it helps, we're moving from Augusta, GA. (I know things will be a lot more expensive than GA) We've also lived in: Fort Lauderdale, FL, Tulsa, OK, Provo, UT, Naples, FL, Fontana, CA, Savannah, GA and Wahiawa, HI. I've visited Orange County, but only once during the summer back in 2001, so I don't know the area very well.
Perhaps the Scotchtown/Mechanicstown/Washington Heights part of the area may have something and they are essentially suburbs of Middletown. I believe a part of that area is in the Pine Bush School District too.
Middletown's downtown area isn't all that nice but I don't think that it is that unsafe during the day. I do think that there will be other options in the area for $1200 in a safer more suburban environment. You will need to drive no matter where you live in the area. Middletown has a large library and neighboring wallkill has a mall and all the big box stores.
